About the Artwork

Christo and Jeanne-Claude (Christo Javacheff [1935–2020] and Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon [1935–2009]), The Gates (Project for Central Park, New York City), 1984
Graphite, charcoal, pastel, wax crayon, enamel paint, fabric, and printed map on paper, each section mounted on board and squared in white for transfer. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City. © 2021 Artists Rights Society (ARS) New York / ADAGP, Paris

In 2005, Christo and his wife, the French-American artist Jeanne-Claude, animated 23 miles of wintry Central Park pathways with wind-blown hangings of saffron-colored fabric. The top drawing plots the route of The Gates, while the bottom one envisions their installation against the New York City skyline.
