JEAN FAUTRIER

AMERICAN LANDSCAPES (PAYSAGES AMERICAINS), ROCKEFELLER CENTER (OM6), 1950

About the Artwork

Jean Fautrier (1898–1964), American Landscapes (Paysages Américains), Rockefeller Center (OM6), 1950
Mixed media on paper, laid on canvas Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City. © 2021 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris.

This work dates to the French artist’s 1950 visit to New York. Black slashes describe the steel skeletons of the Rockefeller Center skyscrapers, while the splayed perspective heightens their towering effect.

OM6 refers to “original multiples,” a contradictory term Fautrier coined to challenge ideas of originality and authenticity.
