William H. Harnden (1920–1983), Park Avenue, ca. 1929
Oil on board. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City
This painting commemorates Midtown, newly beautified. Once marred by a railyard, Park
Avenue forms a landscaped corridor culminating in the New York Central (now Helmsley)
Building. Harnden’s clean, symmetrical composition mirrors the Beaux-Arts principles of the
new tower and urban redesign program of which it was a part.
