Arthur Clifton Goodwin (1864–1929), Horseback Riders in Central Park, Winter, ca. 1918–20
Oil on canvas. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City
Goodwin was one of few American Impressionists to favor city subjects. Here, bordering
buildings define Central Park as an urban greenspace. Loose brushwork describes colored
shadows and the play of sunlight on snow.
