About the Artwork

Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986), Study for Brooklyn Bridge, 1949
Charcoal and black and white chalk on paper. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City. © Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

Brooklyn Bridge envelops the viewer. Its suspension cables curve into the foreground, as the twin arches of one of its iconic towers soars overhead.

Often on Sundays, O’Keeffe drove back and forth across this bridge. The drawing may serve as her ode to the city, which she left the same year to settle out West.
