Theodore Earl Butler (1861–1936), Ships in New York Harbor, 1907
Oil on canvas. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City
This busy commercial waterway blurs into a space of lyrical quiet. One of the first artists to paint
an Impressionist New York, Butler uses shades of blue, gray, mauve, and pale green to simulate
fog lifting and refracting the colors of sunlight.
