THERESA BERNSTEIN

THE REHEARSAL AT CARNEGIE HALL, 1948

About the Artwork

Theresa Bernstein (1890–2002), The Rehearsal at Carnegie Hall, 1948
Oil on canvas. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City

Bernstein favors the musicians over their august setting. The tight framing homes in on the singers, mouths open, surrounding a pianist. Bold brushstrokes carry the rhythm and flow of the music, identified by Bernstein as a composition by Jascha Heifetz.
