About the Artwork

Francis Guy (1760–1820), Brooklyn in Winter, ca. 1818. Oil on canvas. Collection of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City.

Guy painted this winter scene from his studio on Front Street in what is now the Brooklyn neighborhood of DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). The painting is likely preparatory to a larger version at the Brooklyn Museum, which populates a slightly wider city view with merchants and laborers as well as members of Brooklyn’s free Black community, which played a vital role in the abolitionist movement and advanced a more encompassing vision of democracy in the decades following the American Revolution.
