About the Artwork

Fred Pansing (1844–1912), New York Harbor, ca. 1900
Oil on canvas. Promised gift of Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, Scenes of New York City

New York Harbor bustles with activity. Pleasure craft mix with commercial vessels, including a Long Island Sound steamboat and French transatlantic ocean liner. Pansing, who had worked as a sailor and lived near the Hudson River, became a premier New York ship painter. His work marks the early history of the city as a history of the sea.
